Discovery Recount
We completed the hand count of votes in the 6 precincts selected by Mr. Kirchner and Ms. Bell today. In each instance, the hand count of votes, using statutory guidelines for voter intent, matched the machine count from election night. In four instances, voters used either check marks or Xs to mark their ballots. It appears that the machine counted those on election night.
We are ecstatic that the hand count has shown the accuracy of the new voting equipment.
I believe the hand count was the most important part of today’s discovery recount. At the same time, I think it is important to note that there are a number of issues that routinely have come up in recounts around the state. Mr. Kirchner and Ms. Bell will no doubt be reviewing those as they decide whether to file for a full recount with the circuit court. This post merely serves to give confidence to the public about the equipment. It in no way should lead anyone to believe that I have any judgments about the merits of the cases of Mr. Kirchner and Ms. Bell.
Thanks to Mark Shelden and his staff for their professionalism and courtesy in conducting today’s discovery recount for county board District 9.
