Referenda in Champaign County

Published by at 11:18 am under Elections

During this last year our staff has been doing a lot of work in compiling the historical documents in this office. One part of that history are the referenda that have been held. We now have a list of those available on our website in date order or in order by taxing district.

    MARK–

RE SAVOY’S VOTE TO PLACE SALES TAX REFERENDUM ON THE PRIMARY BALLOT–WOULDNT A TAX REFERENDUM HAVE TO BE PLACED ON A GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT?

The Savoy sales tax referendum can appear on the February ballot.

Very few referenda have restrictions on what ballot they must appear. Liquor referenda must appear on the consolidated election ballot (municipal election) and the election commission must appear on a general election ballot (November). There may be other restrictions for other issues but I think that all tax referenda can be placed on any ballot.

Thanks, Mark. Tax quesions should have to be placed on general election ballots, many voters do not vote in primaries as they don’t want to affiliate with a specific party–if they want to weigh in on the tax question, they will have to take a partisan ballot to do so. Seems wrong.

Just to clarify, any voter desiring to vote only a referendum can do so by requesting a nonpartisan ballot that will include just referenda. So in the Village of Savoy, voters can pick up a Green, Republican, Democratic, or nonpartisan ballot.
