Published by Champaign County Clerk at 4:54 pm under Elections

I’ll try to keep this updated each day.  Absentee voting (with an excuse) started September 25.  Early voting started October 13 and continues to October 30.  In person absentee voting will resume on October 31.  Ballots are also being cast through the mail.

How does this compare to prior years?

At this time last year, we had 948 people vote in our office. Not included in the numbers above are the 266 grace period voters we’ve processed.

My husband and I voted on Saturday, Oct. 18, and I just wanted to congratulate the County Clerk’s office on how smooth everything was. Everyone behind the counter was efficient and courteous, and it all went quickly. It is so nice not to have to rush out on Election Day after we leave work and pick up our daughter from day care.

How long is the typical wait right now? What’s the best time of day to come?

  5. Champaign County Clerk on 26 Oct 2008 at 8:33 am by Champaign County Clerk

Waits are as long as one hour once 11 am comes. it seems like early morning is better. we’re open until 7 on Tuesday. On Thursday, when we were open until 7, there was a fairly short wait (10-15 minutes) the last hour.

Functionally, what is the difference between early voting and in-person absentee voting?

  9. Champaign County Clerk on 31 Oct 2008 at 10:54 am by Champaign County Clerk

once you’ve cast your ballot, there is no difference. Early voting is without excuse. Absentee voting requires an excuse, such as being an election judge or being absent from the County on election day.

What is the difference between early voting and absence voting

  12. Champaign County Clerk on 11 Mar 2010 at 11:08 am by Mark Shelden

In the past, absentee voters needed to have a statutory reason to cast an absentee ballot. For example, they were going to be out of the county or were disabled. Early voting has been without excuse in Illinois and I believe other states.

New Illinois election law changed this to make absentee voting without excuse as well so there is now no distinction between the two.
