Election Systems and Software, whose election equipment we use, has purchased Premier Election Solutions, which is the old Diebold election company that was spun off from the parent.  It marks the end of a remarkable run up and then down by Diebold.

We examined Diebold when it was time to purchase our equipment and they fell short.  We rated their accessibility solution below the ES&S solution.  From my perspective, the number one reason to go with ES&S was the superiority of their ballot design software.  This software has allowed us to save hundreds of thousands of dollars by designing our ballots in house.

ES&S is an excellent company.  I’m confident that they’ll pull off this transition well.  At the same time, their staff will be called upon to design ballots and the program for a new system.  Around the country, election authorities need to be especially thorough in their testing to make sure that this transition goes well.

One of the reasons that we like designing our ballots in house is precisely this.  We won’t suffer from the inevitable changes that come within the election industry.  We have software and hardware that work and are in our control.
